How to choose a body shop: 7 questions to ask before you commit
Body shop quality varies enormously. The shop you pick determines whether your repair looks factory-new or you spot the work every time you walk to your car. The signal-to-noise on Google reviews is low (every shop has a few cranks who left 1-star reviews because the work took longer than expected), so the better tactic is to ask seven specific questions in person and listen carefully to the answers.
Question 1: What's your turnaround estimate?
Good shops give specific turnaround estimates with a range. 'Probably 4-6 business days' is a strong answer. 'A week or two' is vague; they don't really know their own backlog.
Better shops mention the actual constraints: 'we need to order the part, that's 2 days, then paint is 3 days because we need to wait for the clear to cure overnight, then 1 day for assembly.' Specificity here correlates with how dialed-in their process is.
Watch for shops that promise turnarounds far shorter than their competitors. Either they're padding numbers and you'll be disappointed, or they're cutting corners on cure times that affect long-term paint durability.
Question 2: Do you use OEM or aftermarket parts?
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts come from the same supplier as your factory parts. They fit perfectly and the paint matches will be cleaner. They cost 20-50% more than aftermarket.
Aftermarket parts are made by third-party manufacturers to fit. Quality varies: some are nearly indistinguishable, others have subtle fitment issues that show up as gaps or alignment problems years later.
The right answer depends on you. If you want factory-new results and don't mind paying, ask for OEM. If you're cost-sensitive and the repair is on a panel that won't show fitment issues (a fender vs a bumper cover), aftermarket is reasonable.

Question 4: Can I see examples of your recent work?
Every body shop has a parking lot full of recent repairs: finished vehicles waiting for pickup. Ask to see a couple. Good shops volunteer this; lesser shops dodge.

This is one of the most common sources of repair disputes. The shop tears into a damaged area and finds more damage than the original estimate covered. How do they handle it?
Good answer: 'We stop and call you. We send photos of what we found, give you a revised estimate, and don't proceed until you authorize it.' This is the standard for ethical shops.

Certification matters most for: aluminum-bodied vehicles (Tesla, F-150, many luxury cars), advanced driver assistance systems that need recalibration after fender or windshield work, and vehicles where the manufacturer requires specific welding/bonding processes.
For mass-market vehicles with steel bodies and no ADAS, certification matters less. Plenty of excellent shops do great work on Civics and Camrys without manufacturer-specific certifications.
Question 7: Can you handle the insurance side?
If you're filing an insurance claim, ask how the shop typically works with adjusters. Good shops have established processes: they communicate directly with your adjuster, send photos and revised estimates as needed, and advocate for you without making you the middleman.
Some shops are 'direct-bill' shops with specific insurers: they've pre-negotiated rates and processes, so the work flows smoothly. The trade-off is the shop has a relationship with the insurer that creates a mild incentive to keep estimates within insurer-friendly bounds.
Independent shops that don't have direct-bill relationships sometimes advocate more aggressively for the customer because they don't have an insurer relationship to protect. Both models can work; what matters is the shop's communication style.
